National philharmonic orchestra

The National philharmonic orchestra has concerts most days beginning at 7pm. They are located in the very centre of Kiev.

Kiev ballet

Kiev ballet is mostly held at the Kiev Opera house. Situated in the centre of the city, tickets can be obtained from the Opera house or often from the many ticket kiosks scattered throughout the city.

Opera

Kiev Opera is something not to be missed while in Kiev. Major performances are held in the Kiev Opera house. Tickets are available from the box office or from ticket kiosks throughout the centre and are priced from 50 hrivna upwards

Major sights

Lavra Percherska

No visit to Kiev would be complete without visiting the caves and catacombs within the complex of many churches. Saints relics are contained within the caves. Lavra is also known as the Monastery of caves. Built in the 11h century, the caves hold many bodies still preserved to this day.

National Opera house

A magnificent building set 100 metres from Kreschatyk st. The National Opera house still hosts most of the major opera, music and theatrical shows in Kiev.

St Sophia cathedral

Built in the 11th Century by Prince Yaroslav the wise, the 13 golden domes dominate the Kiev skyline. The cathedral was used as a meeting point for visiting ambassadors to Kiev and is now famous for it’s many beautiful frescoes and mosaics.

Golden gate

As it name suggests, the golden gate was the original gate to the historic city of Kiev which was surrounded by a fortified wall. Built in the 11th century it is now known as the Golden gate museum.

Andriyivsky uzviz 

The oldest and probably the steepest street in Kiev. The cobblestoned road hosts many cafes and cultured restaurants. Outdoor stalls sell mostly tourist items but you can find some interesting souvenirs to remember your trip to Kiev.

 Independence square 

Situated at the lower end of Kreschatyk, Independence square has been the site of many protests. 1st against the Soviet regime run from Moscow and more recently during the Orange revolution.

Concerts and Events

Kiev has become more and more popular for major acts and artists over the last few years.

Depeche Mode were here in February this year.

Museums

The great patriotic war museum

Sichnevoho Povstannya 44

Situated in the pedestal of the Rodyna Mat,  the titanium goddess stautue overlooking Kiev’s right bank. This museum focuses on the victory of Ukraine over the 2nd world war Nazis. A separate exhibition details the struggle of socialism in the 3rd world, most particularly Afghanistan and Angola.

 

The Museum of folk architecture and life.

More commonly known as Pirogov, this park hosts over 300 original pieces of architecture gathered to represent the various historical ways of life in Ukraine. Showing small houses and dwellings dating back over many centuries, this theme park is a very interesting afternoon in the countryside. Spread out over hundreds of acres, you’ll need comfortable walking shoes if you plan to explore it all.

 

The national museum of art

This building was previously the museum of history but now holding the largest collection of Ukrainian art in the world.

Cinemas

Kiev has many cinemas in the centre of the city. They sometimes show movies in English and we list them when shown here so check back to see what is on now.

 

Currently ”Mr Nobody”  is being shown at Zhovten cinema in English.

Also, “Antichrist” is being shown at Zhovten cinema in English,

 ”A serious man” is being shown in English at Zhovten cinema from the 8th to the 21st of April
